Last Sunday and today I had the chance to visit the „Henri Matisse en son temps“ exhibition at the Fondation Pierre Gianadda in Martigny, Switzerland. My buddy Christoph and his father joined me today and after short walk throught Martigny we reached the fondation. After seeing the main part of the exhibition we also saw the photographs of Henri Cartier-Bresson and the world famous classic car exhibition where you can see some really rare examples from Bugatti, Mercedes and Rolls Royce. After the visit of the main building we also saw the „80th anniversary photographs exhibition from Leonard Gianadda, founder and director of the Foundation Pierre Gianadda“ at the old arsenal building. Finally we saw the sculptures in the park and I bought some books of older exhibitions (Monet, Bieler and Turner).
The exhibition of Matisse is separated in two parts. One are Matisse paintings and other paintings from Picasso, Renoir and other. The second part are his colorful silhouettes. Henri Matisse was born on December 31 in 1869 in France. Beside the work as a painter he was also a sculptor, printmaker and draughtsman. He is know for one the greatest fauvism artist and with Picasso as the major artist of the classic modernism. His art book with colorful silhouettes is known as the highlight of his artist career. The Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence which he planed and decorated his masterpiece. The teacher of Matisse at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris was Gustave Moreau, a french symbolist painter. Famous works of Matisse are „the dance“ (first version) from 1909, Museum of Modern Art, New York and „the algerian“ also from 1909, Centre Pompidou,Paris. In 1954 Henri Matisse died in Cimiez.
This visits showed me a new artist. Before the exhibition i just knew his name and now I finally see his works live. All in all a must-see exhibition for art lovers.
